….Applaud Oyo government over response to fire victims

The Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) has underscored the pivotal role of insurance in disaster management in the country. However, it bemoaned the fire disaster that ravaged Akesan Market (Oja Akesan), in Oyo town, where properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.

But the council expressed gratitude to the state’s Governor, Seyi Makinde, for his promise to bring succor to the victims of the incident, as well as provide firefighting equipment to forestall a repeat of such ugly incidents

NCRIB President, Dr. Bola Onigbogi, who spoke to The Guardian, over the weekend, decried the spate of incessant fire disasters in the country, noting that such occurrences were preventable by government than those often concerned.

According to her, risks are part of the inevitable circumstances of life, which effect could be better managed by engaging insurance as it is practiced in advance countries of the world. However, she noted that to maximise the value of insurance, the best option for existing and potential clients was to engage the services of insurance brokers.

According to her, the brokers are in the position to advise clients on best possible type and rate of insurance, as well as assist them to make their claims when a loss occurs. She called on the government to always embrace insurance for effective prudential management and to assist the citizens by shifting the burden of compensation to insurers when loses occur to them, against the government’s attitude of giving succor to the victims, which in most cases, may be inadequate.

The Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) has described the stagnation of the global economy due the COVID-19 pandemic as worrisome.

It said the development has also negatively challenged the earnings of workers in public and private sectors and stifled all forms of social relationships that Nigerians are known for.

President and Chairman, Governing Board of NCRB, Dr. (Mrs.) Bola Onigbogi, made the assertion yesterday in Abuja when she and some members of the association contributed to Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA’s) palliative pool to cushion the effect of COVID-19 lockdown. https://dcf7e943d980bf27e56ce81ec0136270.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

She said, “All hands must be on deck to fight the pandemic and liberate our people and the economy. We must do the needful, contribute meaningfully, put energy to the fight and not lose hope.

“The world is confronted with the grimmest challenges, occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic, it is in furtherance of NCRB’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. Prior to this event, the Council had also given palliatives to Lagos State.”

Receiving the items, Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, commended the NCRB for supporting the vulnerable with relief items and stressed the need for collaboration in the fight against COVID-19, while assuring that the items would be distributed to the communities.

Items donated include, 100 bags of 25kg rice, 400 face masks, 50 hand sanitisers, 25 cartoons of spaghetti and 25 cartoons of tomato paste.

Meanwhile, National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party Youth Alliance (PDPYA), Emeka Kalu, has asked the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to address insecurity and poverty in the country, insisting that it should solicit ideas to save the country from its incompetence and cluelessness.

Kalu, who spoke with OHAFIA-TV in Lagos, insisted that the nation was in a devastating state in all aspects of national life and that the COVID-19 pandemic had worsened the situation by throwing the administration into further confusion.

“The centre can no longer hold, yet they are throwing tantrums at the opposition and perceived opponents rather than admit their failure.

“Section 14 (2) b of the 1999 Constitution as amended states that the most important function of government is to protect the health and safety of the people. But what we see these days is opposite of government’s functions,” he stated.

He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to consult experienced leaders like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former heads of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Ibrahim Babangida and others to assist in fashioning out working strategy to get Nigeria out of its many challenges.
